Bernal Aguilar, known artistically as Tokebi (Korean: 도깨비), is a multifaceted Guatemalan artist, illustrator, and academic born in 1981. He is renowned for incorporating skulls, vibrant neon hues, and a Kitsch aesthetic into his creations. Tokebi has carved a niche in the music industry, particularly among rock bands, rappers, and DJs, establishing himself as a pivotal figure in the Guatemalan lowbrow art movement and an international representative of the same.

Tokebi’s artistic journey commenced in 2010 in the bustling streets of Hongdae, Seoul. There, he sold his art on signed prints and t-shirts, making a name for himself in the local media as a successful foreign artist. In 2014, he played a significant role in the founding of an artistic collective, which included both local and international artists. This collective was responsible for organizing two notable exhibitions in Seoul: “Nothing Serious I” and “Nothing Serious II,” aimed at fostering collaboration between international and Korean artists.

Tokebi work primarily revolves around the indie, rock, hip hop, and electronic music scenes, collaborating with internationally acclaimed bands like Mastodon, Calcium, and various local bands across the United States, Australia, and Europe. Alongside his artistic pursuits, Tokebi is dedicated to academia, teaching Digital Illustration, Graphic, and Multimedia Design at Universidad del Istmo in Guatemala. Recently, his focus has shifted towards the burgeoning world of non-fungible tokens (NFTs). In recognition of his contributions, the Ministry of Culture and Sports of Guatemala included him in the National Artist Registry in 2022.
